Australian history studies will continue to maintain a high profile in Ireland following an endowment of $1.5 million paid to University College Dublin (UCD), announced today by the Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP.

“This significant endowment will support the Keith Cameron Chair of Australian History, in one of Ireland’s leading universities,” Minister Bishop said.

“An original endowment was provided to UCD in 1985 to help set up a Chair of Australian History as a visiting professorship.”

The Chair has been filled by a number of Australian academics since its inception. The last holder was Professor Hilary Carey from the University of Newcastle.

“The Australian Government has demonstrated its support for teaching and research in Australian history by providing funding to numerous European and American universities over many years,” Minister Bishop said.

“These endowments encourage policy engagement with Australia’s key allies on critical current issues and raise the profile of Australia’s academic community.”

This further endowment was initially announced last year by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard MP during a visit to Dublin.
