Previously, academic visitors to Australia could apply for a 419 Visiting Academic Visa directly with the Department of Immigration once they received their letter of invitation from the institution. New rules now require the Australian institution to lodge a nomination for 419 visa applicants. The main implications are:

  • Timeframes – Given that institutions are now required to submit a visa nomination, it will take longer for visitors to obtain their visa and arrive in Australia.
  • Cost – Each nomination will cost the relevant School/Department $140.
